Austin sisters claim prizes at Junior Spring Classic
Cattle enthusiasts gathered at the fifth annual Minnesota Junior Spring Classic cattle show held at the Mower County Fairgrounds April 13 through 15.
Hannah Burkhart, 12, of Austin, claimed the honors of Champion Highland Steer with her 540 pound steer. Hannah’s sister, Mya Burkhart, 10, claimed Champion Highland Femal honors with her March 2011 heifer. Burkhart was one of 255 youth who participated in the weekend-long event. Most contestants began the weekend with a fitting, feeding, advocacy and showmanship boot camp, along with a Saturday night dinner for all participants. On Sunday, judges Scott Bayer and Bob May of Wisconsin sorted through 252 heifers and 99 steers before wrapping up the afternoon with showmanship divisions.
