The Life We Bury

The Life We Bury

OK, Austin and area readers, you still have just under three weeks to read this year’s Austin Page Turner’s selection.

Allen Eskens will visit the Austin Public Library at 7 p.m. on April 28 to speak and talk about his book, “The Life We Bury.”

The story follows Austin native Joe Talbert as he interviews Carl Iverson, a dying convicted murderer, for a class and begins investigating the 30-year-old case, all while dealing with a bipolar, alcoholic mother and his autistic brother.

After interviewing Eskens for a Spotlight feature a few weeks ago, a few of us on the newsroom opted to read the book ahead of attending the library event.

We’re a far cry from a true book club. It’s felt a bit more like a family car ride with the faster reader prodding “Are you done yet?” before a recap and a few quick talks about the literary/narrative journey.

While suspenseful mysteries aren’t my go-to literary genre, I would recommend “The Life Ee Bury” as a great page-turner —pun intended — that keeps you guessing until the end.

After a fun experience of simply sharing in a read, I can’t wait to share it with the many people at the library later this month.

So if you haven’t already, checkout a copy at the library or buy one at Philomathian Religious Books, 309 N. Main St.
