Convicted check forger guilty again

A felon previously convicted in Mower County for check forgery changed her plea to guilty in another check forgery case.

Amy Kathryn Potter, 29, of St. Ansgar, pleaded guilty on Friday to one charge of check forgery — alter check. Another charge for check forgery with intent to defraud was dismissed. According to the court complaint, Potter deposited a $6,275.48 check into a local bank and took $1,275.48 of that amount in cash. The bank later notified authorities about multiple attempts to get money from Potter as the bank was unable to locate the check’s account.

Authorities discovered Potter was in jail in Mitchell County, Iowa, for writing a bad check, according to the court complaint. A detective interviewed Potter, and Potter admitted to filling out the information on the check and depositing it on July 11; however, she denied signing it.

Potter’s sentencing is set for May 30.
