Packer wrestlers take 10th in South St. Paul

The Austin wrestling team finished 10th out of 16 teams at the South St. Paul Invite Saturday.

The Packers scored 77.5 team points and Monticello won the meet with a score of 231.5.

Devon Felten, who is 19-5 on the season, took second at 103 and Brennen Russell took second at 112 for the Packers.

Felten went 3-1 on the day as he picked up two pins and a tech. fall in his first three matches.

He nearly pinned Jarred Oftedahl of Benilde St. Margarets, who is ranked No. 4 at 103 in Class ‘AA’ but Oftedahl made a reverse to pin Felten 57 seconds into the match.

“Devon took Oftedahl directly to his back with a takedown early in the first period and just as the fall was imminent, Oftedahl rolled Devon through and secured a fall of his own,” Austin head coach Bill Kinney said. “Devon has shown throughout this season that he is one of the best 103 pound wrestlers in the state. This match was just another piece of evidence for that argument.”

Russell, who is 15-5 at 112, had two first period pins in his first two matches and he beat Seoulec Gunvalson of Benilde St. Margarets, who has 22 wins this year, 8-1 in the semifinals.

Eric Borgeois of Monticello, who is ranked No. 7 at 112 in Class ‘AA’ beat Russell 14-4 in the finals.

Erick Power took fifth at 119 pounds for Austin while going 3-1, Brandon Cotter took sixth at 125 pounds, while going 2-2, and Thomas Herrera was fourth at 215 pounds, while going 2-2.

Kinney said that the Packers are hoping to get healthy and get all their wrestlers back in action as the season winds down.

“We have wrestled a nice string of ranked kids with the best wrestlers on our team, and competed very well,” he said. “Our top guys are right there with anyone in the state. We will need to take the next step forward though to get those kids to advance out of sections. We have three weeks to make the kind of physical and mental improvements we need get those kids on to the next level.”
