To the Editor,

In the wake of the tragic loss of State Senator Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, Minnesotans have been reminded of what authentic leadership looks like—not only in the lives they led but in the way our national and state leaders responded to their passing.

Effective leadership is not measured solely by policy wins or political stature. It is defined by empathy, courage, and the ability to unite people in moments of profound sorrow. We witnessed a powerful display of such leadership at the recent funeral held at the Basilica of St. Mary. Governor Tim Walz, who delivered a heartfelt eulogy, reminded us that Melissa and Mark led “with joy and passion. With respect and empathy. With purpose and humility.” His words were not just a tribute — they were a call to action for all of us to lead with the same grace.

Former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris also attended the funeral, offering their presence not as political figures but as fellow Americans honoring two lives of service. President Biden, known for his deeply personal approach to leadership, stood in silent reflection at the Capitol rotunda, making the sign of the cross and kneeling before the caskets. Vice President Harris, invited by the Hortman family, offered quiet support to the grieving children, Colin and Sophie. Their compassion was not performative — it was deeply human.

Noticeably absent was anyone from the Trump administration. At a time when Minnesota and the nation needed a powerful, uniting force, the current administration was nowhere to be seen.

In a time when political discourse is often divisive, the bipartisan gathering at the Hortmans’ funeral was a rare and moving reminder that leadership rooted in empathy can transcend party lines. As Governor Walz said, “Maybe this is a moment when each of us can examine the way we work together… A moment when each of us can recommit to engaging in politics and life the way Mark and Melissa did”.

Let us honor the Hortmans by mourning their loss, emulating their example, and recognizing and supporting leaders who lead with heart.

Sincerely,

Beth Huffman
