John A. Lindberg, 99

John A. Lindberg, age 99, of Lyle, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, surrounded by his family at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.

John was born on August 28, 1925, in Northfield, Minnesota to John J. and Esther (Larson) Lindberg. He was educated in Northfield before serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War, stationed in Okinawa from 1954 – 1956.

On September 25, 1951, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Elwood at the Church of the Annunciation in Hazelwood, MN.

Upon returning to the United States, he worked as a Depot Agent for the Milwaukee Railroad, taking his young family to Lyle, MN where they settled down. John served on the city council, served as mayor and was the Commander of the American Legion Post 105 of which he was a member for 68 years.

John worked as a Realtor and Appraiser from 1973 through 2007 when he retired at age 82. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage, with both sides of his family immigrating from Norway to the U.S. for a better life. He was incredibly warm and sociable with an uncanny ability to talk to anyone at any time in any place. Speaking with John made you feel like you had known him your whole life.

John is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 75 years, Shirley; and their children, Brad (Jeni), Kent (Missie), Dawn (Pat); grandchildren, Scott (Nicole), Michael (Amanda), Megan (Nic), Sarah (Jerome), Matthew (Kat), Nickolas, Jacob, Lindy (Tanner); great-grandchildren, Avery (Bre), Elliot, Jonas, Camille, Gretchen; and great-great grandson Coen. He is also survived by his brother, Winston (Connie) and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Warren, Clinton, Orville and Kenwood; his sisters: Grace and Dorothy; and in-laws; Paul and Rosella Elwood.

The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Mark’s Nursing Home and St. Croix Hospice for the excellent care that they gave to John.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 pm on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lyle with Father James Berning officiating followed by military honors by the Lyle American Legion Post 105, Austin American Legion Post 91 and the Austin VFW.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the mass at the church.

A celebration of John’s life will continue at the Lyle American Legion following the mass and all are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lyle or the Lyle American Legion.
