Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Thumbs up for renewal. We really enjoyed seeing and being at the Recharge Austin EV Ride & Drive event Thursday at Riverland Community College. Not only was it a chance to really see what electric transportation is truly capable of and how far it’s come, it was also a fundraiser that will benefit the students of the college. Thanks to Thursday’s event, the future is looking bright.

Thumbs up for access. Over the years there has been a concerted effort to improve recreational opportunities on the Cedar River and earlier this week another stroke in this long paddle of improvement was announced. Another river access will be added south along Highway 105 and will provide another easy launch of canoe or kayak on the Cedar. It’s another chance for some prime time on the river.

Thumbs down to budget impact. It was disheartening to realize in the first place that the state legislature needed a special session to get their work done, but it was even more worrisome because of the impact it had on smaller entities further down the chain. While certainly it wasn’t the only example in the state, the special session left the Austin Public Schools budget in something of a stall as it waited to see what the fallout might be before it could approach some of its work. It puts unneeded pressure and stress on these governmental bodies who don’t have the luxury to call a special session to finish their work.

Thumbs up for good food, good cause. This past weekend’s Grillin & Chillin Backyard BBQ Rib Competition provided both amazing food and raised money for the Mower County Humane Society and this first event is also setting the stage for more events in the future. It was fantastic to be able to help the 100% run Humane Society, but getting some amazing food in the bargain — that’s just icing on the cake … or should we say sauce on the rib?

Thumbs up for pickleball efforts. We’re completely behind the efforts of the Austin Minnesota Area Pickleball Association and its quest for courts in Austin. Any time we can add extra amenity for people in the area, then it’s a win, especially for an activity that continues to grow both around the nation and right here at home, drawing in players each day.
