The world of sports is changing fast and soon I’ll be embarking on an effort to find out just how much things have changed.

In the coming weeks, expect to see some stories on sports parents who were once athletes themselves. You’ll get an inside look on how things have changed in the past 30 years and you’ll also hear about what it means to go from athlete to parent of an athlete. I’m specifically selecting three-sport athletes for these stories as they will have the best perspective on today’s sports climate.

The goal is to highlight the positives of sports in today’s world, while also discovering the challenges.

With sports specialization, and the constant race to pursue scholarships gaining steam, things certainly aren’t like they used to be. When I was in high school in the late 1990s, my version of ‘summer travel ball’, was going to the local court to play randoms who happened to be visiting town.

These stories should give readers an inside look at what it means to be a high school student athlete in today’s world, while also highlighting the challenges of being a parent in today’s busy and hectic sports scene.

I always look forward to doing stories that take a deeper dive, and these will be no different. Look for the first one of the series coming soon.
