Our hearts go out to the families and friends of Past Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Our sincere wishes for a full recovery go to Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

The American Legion Department of Minnesota unequivocally condemns political violence. There is no place in civil society for assassinations, violent acts or violent rhetoric. They run counter to the peaceful discourse required by the American form of government.

We are deeply saddened by the heinous actions of today, June 14, Flag Day, right here in our own state. This violence happened to our neighbors — our fellow Minnesotans — and no matter how many news reports we receive, it’s hard to fathom.

Department Legislative Chair Kristy Janigo, Past Legislative Chair Bob Hart, past department commanders, along with the Legion staff and other Legionnaires involved with our efforts to support veterans at the Capitol would encounter Hortman and Hoffman frequently in committee hearings, office visits and various events like the Legion Legislative Mixer. With their track records, both lawmakers can be considered to be friends of veterans in their communities and at the Capitol.

The American Legion Preamble promotes peace and goodwill, law and order, and the principles of justice, freedom and democracy.

Going forward, let’s work toward peaceful solutions through sound and logical dialogue.
