As the summer season begins, families are enjoying more outdoor adventures and fun in the sun. Amidst the excitement, there’s a hidden challenge many parents face: the “summer slide”—a decline in children’s academic skills, especially in reading, during the long break. Fortunately, the Austin Public Library is here to help. With a summer full of free activities, events, and reading incentives, the library is offering a fun and engaging way to prevent the summer slide while rewarding readers of all ages.

This summer, the Austin Public Library is inviting everyone — from kids to adults — to participate in the Summer Reading Club, Monster Mash Summer Bash. The library has long been a resource for families, providing access to books, learning tools, and enrichment programs that ensure a summer full of discovery and fun.

Throughout the summer, the library offers something for everyone to help nurture a love of reading. Young children can enjoy interactive storytime sessions that introduce them to the magic of books and early literacy skills. For school-aged kids, teens, and adults, the library’s Summer Reading Program keeps minds engaged, encouraging participants to read regularly while offering exciting events.

This year, the library is taking its summer to the next level. Participants can enjoy a wide range of activities designed to inspire creativity and learning. From STEAM workshops that spark curiosity in science, technology, engineering, art, and math, to arts and crafts sessions, digital trivia, music, there’s something for everyone. These programs not only prevent the summer slide but also provide opportunities for exploration, creativity, and critical thinking.

To join the fun, participants can stop by the library to pick up their Reading & Activity Log for the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge. The log is designed to track reading progress and participation in library activities. So, stop by the Austin Public Library this summer to get started, and make reading a part of your family’s summer adventure!
