When Ailani Thiravong moved back to Austin from Illinois as a seventh grader, she was well known as the middle schooler who could keep up with the high schoolers in the Big Nine.
Now Thiravong, a sophomore, is no longer known just for her potential, but for what she has already accomplished. She has her sights set on making some big improvements as she takes aim for her second appearance at the Class AAA golf meet in Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids on June 10 and June 11.
Thiravong has been more comfortable this season, as most of her competitors are much closer to her age than they were in the past.
“It gives me more confidence knowing that I’m in their league. I’m basically a junior at this point and it’s exciting to be able to grow, especially with the support of my teammates,” Thiravong said. “Going in last year I was a little more nervous and this year I feel a little more comfortable with the atmosphere. I’m looking forward to playing with these girls again and seeing how much I can improve.”
Last season, Thiravong shot a 163 at the Class AAA state golf meet to finish in 34th place. Owatonna junior Carmen Jirele, who won the Class AAA state meet last season, also took 34th in her freshman season. Thiravong will be playing her practice round with the Huskies and she’s looking to Jirele for inspiration.
“I’ve been able to learn so much from Carmen with her mentality and her strength. I’ve had so much inspiration from her,” Thiravong said. “I know I didn’t play my best at last year’s state tournament, and this year I’m looking to improve my score and be up there with the top girls in the state. My mental game has been one of my struggles this season and that’s something my coaches have helped me work on, as far as navigating the course and being confident in my shot. Going into state, I’ve been focusing on knowing that I’m capable and I have just as much skill as any other girl in the field.”
The Class AAA meet will be held in Bunker Hills at Coon Rapids on June 10 and June 11. The girls will begin play at 7:30 a.m. both days.
Thiravong said she hopes to serve as an inspiration for younger athletes in Austin and she also wants to lend gratitude for those who have helped her develop as a player.
“They say that it takes a village to raise a child and the Austin community is doing a great job,” Thiravong said. “I owe my successes to so many people here. I would like to thank my parents for supporting me in all of my endeavors and I’d like to thank my coaches. Growing up in Austin, where I have the opportunity to play in two beautiful golf courses, is a blessing. My teachers, peers, and school administrators also played a key role in my success.”
