The No. 3 Southland baseball team never gave up in the face of adversity as it rallied from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat No. 11 Lewiston-Altura (7-14 overall) 9-8 in a Section 1A Tournament game at Riverland Community College Saturday.
The Rebels (15-4 overall) had eight straight runners reach base and the final one was Beau Sathre, who roped a bases loaded RBI to the right field fence to end the contest.
“I didn’t want to let the ump make the decision,” Sathre said. “I just wanted to hit the ball and believe in myself. None of us put our heads down, we refused to get out and we scored five runs. We stuck together today; we’re all just a team and we’re all friends.”
Southland head coach Scott Koenigs said his team hadn’t played the cleanest game, but he challenged them to step up in the final frame.
“We met as a team and I told them to do their job. Eight guys in a row did their job,” Koenigs said. “We had some guys battle 3-2 counts and everyone stepped up.”
Southland will now play No. 2 Blooming Prairie in a Section 1A quarterfinal at Riverland at 4 p.m. Monday.
