Across our schools, two of the most common and challenging issues we hear about are student absences and the impact of limited substitute coverage. These issues affect learning, staffing, and school culture in different but connected ways. And while they’re not unique to our district, we know how real and urgent they feel to the people doing the work every day.
We’re committed to addressing both — together.
That’s why we’re launching two joint task forces: one focused on student attendance, and one focused on substitute coverage. Each group will include educators, union leaders, school administrators, and district staff. The goal is to examine the root causes, look closely at the patterns and pressures, and bring forward practical, informed recommendations.
These task forces aren’t symbolic. They’re about shared leadership and real progress. We won’t solve everything overnight, but we are taking a clear step toward action, grounded in the lived experiences of our staff and schools.
More details will be coming soon about how each group will be formed and how staff can get involved.
We’re grateful for the voices that have raised these and other concerns — and we’re ready to do something about them. We’re listening. And we’re moving forward.
Sincerely,
Tom Compton, AEA President
Joey Page, Superintendent
