I would like to voice my appreciation for Austin Daily Herald sports reporter Rocky Hulne and photographer Eric Johnson. As a student athlete parent, I have seen this duo throughout the years covering local prep athletes and other student events. These two somehow manage to attend numerous events and activities in a day, I can only imagine how they manage to fit it all in. Clearly, they have had to adjust their own personal schedules for the duties of their job. I think many are often unaware of or underestimate the amount of juggling they do to provide local coverage. And it’s not only their presence that is noticed. The kids at these events have come to know them well over the years as the pair do a great job of building relationships with students. They are very much an extension of a teacher in a classroom, following students as they progress, cheering them on in their wins and supporting them in their losses. While it may be their job, these two have gone out of their way on numerous occasions to get the story for readers. I appreciate their presence at these events and the coverage they provide. They truly bring community connection through their work.
