A Lyle-Pacelli freshman baseball player found his grooves and the seniors on the squad continued to focus on a strong finish as the Athletics grabbed their 10th consecutive victory in Marcusen Park Tuesday.
LP took advantage of some early GMLOK miscues as it ran away with an 11-0 win in five innings.
The Athletics (11-1 overall) put the game out of reach in the second when Grady Meyer singled in two runs and Logyn Brooks singled in another run to make it 4-0. Meyer, a freshman, also scored the mound win as he scattered three hits and struck out seven.
“We worked all offseason and now we’ve finally got good weather. This is what we’ve worked for,” Meyer said. “I’m really comfortable up there and I’ve got a great group of guys behind me. I’ve just got to put the ball in the strike zone and they make it easy for me.”
LP senior second baseman Logyn Brooks said that the entire team has been behind Meyer, who has delivered when asked.
“(Grady) goes up and he’s got a job to do on the mound,” Brooks said. “The best thing we can do is be vocal and praise him. We’re just there to support him on defense and put up runs on him on offense.”
LP’s offensive attack was boosted by the bottom of the order as Hunter Wollenburg, Case Koopal and Banning Korfhage all had one RBI. Senior Hunter VaDeer also had a big RBI double to the left field fence.
With the clock ticking on LP’s season, Brooks said the seniors are embracing every last inning together as they continue their pursuit of a third straight Section 1A title.
“Every year you’ve got to play every game like it’s your last,” Brooks said. “Now that we’re seniors, you never know when that last game is. It could be right around the corner or it could be a couple of weeks from now. You’ve just got to keep doing what you love.”
GMLOK senior Tyson Stevens took the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs (5-9 overall).
