Austin junior Triumph Ogbeide has grown by leaps and bounds with the Packer track and field team this spring, and now his eighth grade sister Praise Ogbeide is following in his footsteps.
Both siblings had a pair of big finishes for the Packers as the boys and girls teams each took third in a home triangular at Larry Gilbertson track and field Tuesday.
The two have served as each other’s biggest supporters as they’ve found their place with the Austin track and field team this spring. After Praise had a big jump on the high jump, Triumph was the first one to greet his younger sister as he gave her a big hug and hoisted her off the ground.
“(Having her here) has actually meant a lot to me. I pushed her to start and come be with me on the team,” Triumph said. “She’s a great athlete and she’s always been around the house, always pushing herself to be as fast as me. I just feel happy that we can be out here as a family.”
Triumph won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.46 seconds, which is the 26th fastest time in Minnesota this spring, and he took first in long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 4.5 inches, which is the 24th longest jump in Minnesota this season.
“My confidence has grown sky high. Last year I couldn’t even get over 20 in the long jump and this year I’m 21-4,” Triumph said. “Last year I couldn’t get under 16 seconds in the hurdles and now I’m close to the 14s. It’s been phenomenal.”
Praise took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.88 seconds and second in high jump with a height of 4-10.
Praise may be following in her brother’s footsteps, but she’s also looking to make her own mark on the team.
“I thought today was going to be pretty bad, because I wasn’t really feeling it today. But I’m happy with my high jump,” Praise said. “I want to go to state just like my brother does. I push myself harder just to beat (Triumph). I like being on the team, because I get to go out and actually do something instead of being inside all day.”
Sometimes after practice, Triumph and Praise will put in extra work on their jumps at Wescott and that work ethic has helped both of them improve.
Triumph and Praise are two of five total siblings. Their older sister focused on singing, cheerleading and volleyball, but their two younger siblings, who are in elementary school, may end up running track as well.
Either way, Triumph is just happy to have a family member to share his joy with on the team this spring.
“I love that we’re both doing great and our family is out here,” Triumph said. “She’s doing great and I can’t wait until she’s a senior and going to state.”
Myles Taylor took first place in the triple jump for the Packer boys with a distance of 41-9.25.
Austin junior Aidan Falcon became the first AHS athlete to compete in a track and field meet in a wheelchair as he took first as the only competitor in the 100-meter wheelchair race and the wheelchair shot put.
