Spring at last. Time to shake off winter and enjoy the outdoors. Here at the library, we’re also enjoying the warmer weather and looking forward to a time of celebration — National Library Week.
Begun in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country each April. Celebrated this year on April 6-12, it is a time to highlight the many ways libraries bring people together, spark imagination, and support lifelong learning.
Now, more than ever, it is important to understand that libraries are a pivotal and impactful part of our community. What draws people to the library? Everything! From books and digital resources to technology coaching and creative programming, libraries are essential to thriving communities.
According to Minnesota Department of Education State Library Services, in 2022, there were 13.5 million visits to Minnesota Public Libraries. Additionally, there were 53 million items borrowed or downloaded, the internet was accessed using library Wi-Fi 8 million times, and libraries held over 135,000 community events.
At the Austin Public Library, we invite the community to join in the celebration. Whether you’re a longtime patron or haven’t visited in a while, now is the perfect time to explore all the library has to offer. Our library has something for everyone. From Wi-Fi hotspots, STEAM kits, coding classes, and storytimes to books in other languages, digital resources, and our friendly, knowledgeable staff, the library is here to connect everyone to resources that educate, inspire, and connect.
Whatever draws you in, the library has something for you. Libraries serve as hubs for learning, creativity, and connection, helping people of all ages explore new ideas and opportunities.
