ROSE CREEK – The Southland softball team was coming off a tough loss on and it had to play through rain against Lyle-Pacelli on Thursday, which meant the team had to forget and move on.

The Rebels were able to focus and walk away with a 14-1 five inning win, but things didn’t start easy.

Southland sophomore pitcher Laney Weis struggled with the wet ball early on as she walked two and hit one batter in the first inning. LP (1-6 overall) had the bases loaded with two outs when Weis forced a pop out to avoid trouble.

“You’ve just got to forget about the last game (a one run loss to Houston) and bring our energy here today,” Weis said. “We had to wipe our memory from Tuesday and just have fun.”

The Rebels (7-2 overall) put the game away when they scored seven times in the bottom of the third go up 11-0. Southland’s attack was led by sophomore slugger Clara Timm, who went two-for-three with a double and an RBI. Timm has emerged has a highly consistent hitter this spring.

Timm said the key to her improvement has been to have a short memory.

“Not thinking is key. One of my goals right now is to just let it go,” Timm said. “What happened in the last at bat doesn’t really define me. I’ve just got to go up to the plate confident, knowing that I can hit.”

Southland still has a relatively young roster with mostly sophomores on the team, but most of them have a lot of varsity experience and they are hungry to compete this season.

“We’ve improved a lot since we were on varsity in eighth grade,” Weis said. “It’s been really fun seeing everybody improve and we’re wanting to get better every year.”
