The public is welcomed to come to an ecumenical prayer breakfast to be held at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, at Austin First United Methodist Church (UMC), located at 204 First Avenue NW in Austin and coincides with National Day of Prayer.
The breakfast will feature music by local singer Kaye Perry, and the speaker will be UMC Pastor Jane Rubietta. Jane is an author and speaker based in Chicago and known to a wide variety of groups across the world. She will bring a fun, light-hearted message that centers the audience in their faith and builds ties through shared connection.
The National Day of Prayer is a long-standing tradition in the United States, which originated in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Ronald Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.
Tickets for the prayer breakfast are available at the door for $15. In addition to the meal, door prizes will be given away to mark May Day.
