As Easter approaches, families and communities prepare for festive traditions like egg hunts, family gatherings, and special meals. However, for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), these celebrations can sometimes present challenges. By making small adaptations, we can ensure that Easter is an enjoyable and inclusive holiday for all.

Creating accessible Easter egg hunts

Traditional Easter egg hunts can be overwhelming for individuals with sensory sensitivities, mobility limitations, or communication differences. To make egg hunts more inclusive:

Use brightly colored eggs and place them at accessible heights for those with mobility challenges.

Offer noise-free or quiet egg hunts to accommodate those with sensory sensitivities.

Provide visual or picture-based clues for nonverbal participants or those who benefit from additional guidance.

Use different textures or larger eggs for individuals with visual impairments to make them easier to locate.

Sensory-friendly Easter activities

Large gatherings, bright colors, and loud noises can be overstimulating. Consider these alternatives to create a welcoming environment:

Offer a quiet space where individuals can take breaks if they feel overwhelmed.

Provide sensory-friendly activities like decorating eggs with stickers instead of messy dyes or offering soft, plush bunnies instead of candy-filled baskets.

Allow individuals to engage at their own pace and provide structured activities for those who prefer routine.

Inclusive Easter meals

Many traditional Easter meals may not be suitable for individuals with dietary restrictions or sensory food aversions. To accommodate diverse needs:

Offer a variety of food textures and flavors to ensure everyone has options.

Communicate the menu in advance so families can plan accordingly.

Use adaptive utensils or seating arrangements for those who require additional support.

Inclusive church services

For many, attending Easter church services is a cherished tradition. To make services more accessible for individuals with I/DD:

Provide a designated quiet area or sensory-friendly service with lower lighting and reduced noise.

Offer printed materials or visual guides to help individuals follow along with the service.

Ensure seating arrangements accommodate those with mobility challenges.

Use sign language interpreters or closed-captioning for individuals with hearing impairments.

The importance of inclusion

By making these small changes, families and communities can ensure that Easter is a joyful celebration for everyone. Organizations like LIFE Mower County continue to advocate for inclusive events that welcome individuals with I/DD, allowing them to fully participate in holiday traditions. As we celebrate Easter this year, let’s take a moment to recognize the importance of inclusivity. With thoughtful planning and open hearts, we can create meaningful experiences that bring joy to all individuals, regardless of ability.
