Dolores Desmond Morem, 92
Dolores Morem, 92, passed away peacefully March 26th, 2025 in Austin, Minnesota.
Dolores Desmond was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 22nd, 1932 to Daniel William Desmond and his wife Barbara Jane Wilcox Desmond.
Growing up in Minneapolis, Dolores attended Central High School where she excelled in her endeavors as a student and athlete. Some privileges she enjoyed were class president, editor of the yearbook, a member of the National Honors Society, and Girls State. She was voted “Most Athletic” by the peers of her class.
As a result of her studies, Dolores was awarded scholarships to attend the University of Minnesota earning a double major in History and Physical Education. Dolores was 1 of 11 students to receive the “Chimes Award” for leadership, grades, and character.
Dolores graduated in 1954 at the age of 21 and was an instructor at the Minneapolis Park & Rec teaching golf, figure skating and tennis.
Then she accepted a Physical Education teaching position at Austin High School, which had an excellent athletic program. After several years, she went on to teach at Ellis Middle School and was beloved by her students and staff.
While walking up the bleachers at the Austin High School gymnasium, Dolores and a handsome young man accidentally bumped into each other. Roderick (Biddy) Morem wanted to find out who she was and finally found her teaching figure skating at Skinners Hill Pond. He invited her out for coffee, they fell in love and were married in 1956.
Together they made their home in Austin, where they raised their seven children.
She shared her love of sports with her children and grandchildren, especially fond of teaching them figure skating. Dolores also shared her love of art, poetry, and reading with her family.
Her brother Dan will be forever grateful that she taught him how to golf.
For years, Dolores studied different religions and in the 1970s she became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She loved her study of the Bible and enjoyed sharing it with others.
Dolores is survived by her children, Jenny Morem of Austin, Minnesota, Brad and Kathryn Morem of Jupiter, Florida, Melanie and Larry Janssen of Rose Creek, Minnesota, Kathy and Mike Fontana of Scottsdale, Arizona, Ed Lopez (Son in Law) of Globe, Arizona, Doug and Katie Morem of Red Wing, Minnesota, Lee and Mary Morem of Caledonia, Minnesota, 15 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Her brother Daniel Desmond of St. Petersburg, Florida.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husband Roderick “Biddy” Morem, their daughter Beth Morem Lopez, her parents Daniel and Barbara Desmond and her brother Dennis Desmond, his wife Shirley and their daughter Jennifer.
Dolores was loved by her family and friends and will be dearly missed.
