David W. Schaefer, 76

David “Wheels” Schaefer, 76, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

David was born July 25, 1948 in Austin, Minnesota to Wilfred and Isabel (Giles) Schaefer. He graduated from Austin High School in 1969 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. Following his service, he went to work for the City of Austin, retiring after 40 years of employment. While working at Riverside Arena, he attended Albert Lea Vo-tech where he received his two-year Associates Degree in Heating and Air Conditioning. David married Connie Alane Janning on July 3, 1971 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin.

He was a life-long member of Olaf B. Damm, Post #1216 V.F.W.

David enjoyed hockey, bowling, softball, golf and coaching softball and bowling. What he loved most, was going to “his lake” with family and friends. He would spend countless hours guiding everyone to the best spots. When not at the lake, you would find him watching his grandkids, great nieces and great nephews playing sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Roger Schaefer and Bruce Schaefer.

David is survived by his wife of 53 years, Connie Schaefer of Austin; children, Scott (Nikki) Schaefer of Austin, and Brenda (Tanner) Post of North Mankato; five grandchildren, Brianna, Rebecca, Madison, Griffin and Sophia; four great grandchildren, Avalee, Amelia, Ariella, and Liam; brother, Joe (Penny) Schaefer of Manchester, MN; sisters, Nancy (Brad) King of Austin, and Lori (Ron) Jacobs of Mankato; nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A celebration of David’s life will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, May 9th at the Ruby Rupner Auditorium located at the J.C. Hormel Nature Center.
