The Austin City Council on Monday night unanimously voted to approve paying half into a proposed rework of a sidewalk in front of the Historic Paramount Theatre as part of its renovation and expansion project.

The proposal requested that the city contribute $46,500 of the total $93,000 price tag that would rework previous plans in lieu of needed Americans with Disabilities Act adjustments.

Most prominently, the plans call for a bump-out curb that stretches the length of the Paramount entrance and includes a pair of ramps leading up to the sidewalk. There will also be newly painted crosswalks as part of the project.

The proposal was initially passed out of a previous work session by just a slim 3-2 vote, with some council members concerned about putting a dollar amount on the project.

According to Austin Area Arts Director Thomas Robbins Monday night, the project is progressing well toward a hoped-for soft opening during the Austin ArtWorks Festival Aug. 26-27.
