Our opinion: Vacant City Council seat is an opportunity to contribute

It’s a similar notion to that which we urged during election season, but with the news earlier this week that Austin City Council Member Joyce Poshusta was stepping down to take a job in Rochester, we’re once again asking the community members that if you’re civic-minded and want to do something for Austin, then consider stepping up.

It’s far too early at this point as to which route the council will take to fill her position after Poshusta’s final meeting on April 21, but it will come down to one of two options: either a special election will be called or someone will be appointed to the position.

The last time this happened was in 2022 when Geoff Baker was appointed out of three who offered to step up.

Regardless which route is taken, it’s worth considering that if you live in the Third Ward and want to do your part, this is the opportunity to do so in the coming months.

Poshusta’s own words advocated for as much as she challenged those who confine themselves to negativity on social media outlets to step up and in essence — put their money where their mouth is.

We agree.

It’s easy to log into Facebook and simply type out a negative comment when things don’t go the way you think they should. Why not take it a step further? Do your part and throw your hat into the ring and offer to lead.

It’s not an easy job and will take a good amount of time to get used to the seat depending on experience, but it’s well worth it if you think you can add your two cents to the community’s well being.

Poshusta has been a valuable part of the City Council over the years — whether you agree or disagree with her individual decisions or the decisions of the council as a whole. That’s because she chose to give of her time.

There is no more valuable thing you can do for your community than to step in and do what you can. Poshusta has two years remaining on her term after she leaves, meaning that whoever fills her seat will have two years of doing what they can.

Maybe you find out it’s not for you, but gain valuable insight all the same. Or maybe you find out that public service of this kind is really where your heart lies. Either way a tremendous amount of good can be done in giving of yourself.
