Austin Public Schools welcomes new executive director of Special Services

Austin Public Schools has announced the hiring of Sarah Knudsen, Ed.D., as the district’s new executive director of Special Services.

Knudsen has spent over 21 years in educational administration, earning a reputation as a transformational leader who embraces challenges, navigates obstacles, and is dedicated to raising standards.

“I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to serve as Austin’s next Executive Director of Special Services,” Knudsen. “Austin has a strong reputation as a supportive community, and I know great things are happening in the district. I am eager to contribute to its mission and vision, build relationships, and make an immediate, positive impact.”

Throughout her career in education, Knudsen has worked: “to strengthen teams, develop and support integrated services, work within and across community and state agencies, and support local districts to influence positive change.”

She holds a Doctorate in Special Education with a Leadership Emphasis from the University of Northern Iowa and is eager to bring her experience and leadership to the district.

Her expertise in strengthening teams, integrating services, and leveraging data to enhance program effectiveness will be a tremendous asset to our district. We are excited for the positive impact she will bring to our students, staff, and community.”

Knudsen will be taking over for retiring executive director of Special Services Sheri Willrodt, who has been with Austin Public Schools for more than 25 years.
