Austin senior Sam Winkels advanced to the 285-pound semifinals at the Class AA state wrestling meet Friday.

Winkels defeated Isaac Frericks of Sauk Centre-Melrose 12-8 and he will now take on Ian Larrabee of Hibbing to start the day on Saturday.

Winkels took a 9-7 lead in the second period with an escape and a takedown.

Winkels is now 46-2 overall and Larrabee is 40-2 overall.
