Summerset Theatre has released its upcoming productions of the Broadway musical “Hairspray” and the comedic play “Clue: On Stage” during its 57th season this summer at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre.

The two shows have never been performed in Austin and are based on iconic 1980s movies featuring unforgettable characters that became instant cult classics  in pop culture.

In 2003, “Hairspray” won eight Tony Awards and was later adapted as a musical film in 2007.  “Hairspray” tackles the topic of race relations in the 1960s and entertains with some of the campiest music ever written for the stage.

“We have wanted to put on this show for some time, but the rights have been restricted in  recent years,” says John Deyo, co-executive director of Summerset Theatre. “This production features a diverse  cast, impressive dance moves, and challenging music — elements we believe Austin is ready to embrace. Our  community is full of talented individuals, and this show will provide excellent opportunities for everyone to  participate.”

“Clue: On Stage” is inspired by the classic Hasbro board game and features all its iconic characters.

“When I saw  this play, a few years ago, I knew we had to perform it in Austin. Everyone loves a good murder mystery, and this  show brings so much excitement and energy to the stage,” says Randal J. Forster, co-executive director of  Summerset Theatre.

In preparation for Season 57, Summerset will host a series of informational sessions at the First United Methodist Church in partnership with Matchbox Children’s Theatre in Austin. These Community Theatre Info Sessions are  scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Feb. 27 and 10 a.m. to noon on March 1.

Each session will feature light refreshments, a short presentation, various theatre activities, and an opportunity to ask questions about the  theatre scene in Austin. The free event is open for all ages.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about community theatre, especially for those who have never participated before,” says Carrie Moore, a board member of Summerset. “Come see what it’s all about—everyone  is welcome!”

Open auditions for both Season 57 shows will be held from 9-11 a.m. on April 12 and 3-5 p.m. on April 13 at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre. Roles are available for high school students and adults in both productions. No previous experience is necessary, and participants can attend auditions on any of the scheduled dates. For specific character descriptions, song lists, and additional audition materials for both shows, please visit the  Summerset Theatre website for more details.

Season Sponsors for 2025 include the Hormel Foundation, The Austin Area Foundation, IBI Data, and funds from  the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC). Summerset Season 57 is made possible by the voters of  Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation  from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
