The Austin girls basketball team ran into the best team in the Big Nine Conference and the Packers struggled for much of the night as it lost 75-46 in Ove Berven Gym Friday.

The Packers (17-5 overall) trailed 22-16 after Ajiem Agwa hit a jump shot in the first half, but the Spartans responded with a 26-3 run that lasted into the second half. That run put Mayo (17-5 overall) up 48-19 and the Packers never got closer than 20 the rest of the way.

“They have just a number of shooters and it doesn’t matter who it is, whether it’s their post or their fourth girl off the bench. They were just hitting threes,” Austin head coach Eric Zoske said. “That’s a really good team. It wasn’t our best performance, but credit to them for making us look that way. They’re deep, they’re fast and they’re athletic.”

Austin trailed 34-18 at halftime, but Zoske felt the score could’ve been closer if the Packers had converted on some inside opportunities.

“We had some really good looks in the first half that just weren’t going in. Coming off a game against Faribault where everything seemed to go in, we were missing shots that we normally make,” Zoske said. “I thought we played well enough in the first half to be there with them, but we just kind of buried ourselves.”

Agwa led the Packers with 19 points and five rebounds.

Austin used the game to serve as teacher appreciation night as players selected teachers to honor.

“Thanks to the teachers,” Zoske said. “This is one of my favorite nights of the year. I know we have a lot of fantastic teachers here in Austin and there are a lot of hours that go unnoticed and it’s not always a job that they get thanked for.”
