A Sargeant man, with a history of domestic abuse convictions, has made a first appearance in court and faces a pair of new felony domestic assault charges.
Jesse Michael Gonzalez, 37, appeared in Mower County District Court Tuesday to face the charges that are a result of an incident that took place late in the evening of Feb. 15.
According to the court complaint, Mower County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of East Main Street East in Sargeant for a report of yelling and screaming coming from inside the house.
After knocking several times, deputies gained entrance through the owner of the home who was renting it out. After announcing themselves again, deputies moved to a room in the house and found both Gonzalez and the victim on a bed.
The victim was removed from the room by deputies, who noted that she had scratch marks and bruises on her body as well as a swollen lip.
Deputies also noticed that the victim was visibly upset and although she initially refrained from saying what happened, she eventually allegedly admitted that Gonzalez is “mean” and that he hurts her all the time.
Back in the room, the complaint notes that Gonzalez was angry and had repeatedly yelled at the deputies, showing aggression toward them. Gonzalez also appeared to be under the influence of alcohol as deputies allegedly noted Gonzalez had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech and difficulty balancing.
Deputies also observed several empty bottles of alcohol both in the bedroom and throughout the home.
Deputies were previously dispatched to the same home on Feb. 12, on a report of verbal domestic and Gonzalez has three prior convictions dating back to 2014 for terroristic threats, domestic assault-subsequent violation and domestic assault-causing fear.
Gonzalez is currently being held in the Mower County Jail on $50,000 bail or bone with no conditions and $20,000 with conditions.
He is currently scheduled to be in court next for an omnibus hearing on March 17.
