Robert E. Riege, 72

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert E. Riege, beloved husband, stepfather, teacher and friend, who passed away after a sudden short illness in San Tan Valley, Arizona on February 3, 2025, at the age of 72.

Born in Ottumwa, Iowa to Robert and Martha Yochum, Bob was a graduate of Mayo High School in Rochester, MN and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Winona State University.

Bob dedicated over 30 years to the Austin community as a respected teacher. He served as president of the teachers’ union and as head of the history department, leaving a lasting impact on the school and its staff.

Bob and Ginny made their home together and raised a family in Austin where they lived on the “Christmas Street.” In additional to all the decorated houses, Bob dressed as Santa Claus, handing out candy to canes to all the passing cars.

Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman, sharing his love for the outdoors with his wife, best friend and fellow adventurer- Ginny. As a writer and photojournalist team, they created articles and photography published in a number of outdoor magazines. He treasured his time with their loyal Irish Setters, which were family pets and hunting buddies.

He was preceded in death by his adoptive father Robert Riege, parents Robert and Martha Yochum, sister Patricia Gilbertson and brother Paul Yochum.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife, Ginny, stepchildren Aaron (Kelly) Osmon of Austin, Amanda (Jordan) Struck of Shakopee and grandchildren Lanie Osmon, Nora & Cole Struck and brother Mike (Sherrie) Yochum of Albert Lea. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who shared in his life and his many passions.
