The Sixth Street NE project, stretching approximately from 30th Avenue NE to the 1800 North is expected to start in late May of this year and be completed early in July at a total estimated cost of $160,000, with $140,000 of the project being funded through assessments for the street improvements and $20,000 coming from stormwater utility fees for the storm sewer improvements.

The project will include full depth reclamation of asphalt and addressing subbase with additional aggregate on the north half while on the south half there will be a regrade with an aggregate base and a widening to 22 feet.

Storm sewer drainage tiles will be repaired, along with asphalt paving, driveway approach replacement and boulevard restoration.

21st Avenue SW

Starting around mid-month in June, this project will take place between Fourth Drive and 12th Street SW with an estimated completion date of October and at a cost of around $950,000. A breakdown of funding includes $670,000 coming from assessments and local tax levy dollars for the street improvements and $160,000 coming from stormwater utility fees for storm sewer improvements.

An additional $120,000 will fund sanitary sewer improvements through wastewater treatment utility fees. .

The project includes:

  • Removal of existing asphalt pavement along with curb and gutter.
  • Sanitary sewer and manhole replacement.
  • Austin Utilities replacement of water main and services.
  • Storm sewer replacement.
  • Roadway excavation.
  • Installation of drain title and sump pump service stub outs.
  • Placing new aggregate base in the street.
  • Remove and replace existing deficient sidewalk.
  • Constructing pedestrian ramps where sidewalks meet the street.
  • Pouring new concrete curb and gutter.
  • Driveway apron replacements.

Sixth Avenue NE and 18th Drive NE

A similar project in scope to the 21st Avenue SW project, these two roads from 18th Drive to 19th Street NE and Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue NE respectively, will be tackled starting simultaneously in July and will be wrapped up in October at an estimated cost of around $900,000.

Also, like the 21st Avenue SW project, funding for the project will be broken down to $520,000 coming from assessments and local tax levy money for street improvements, $130,000 from stormwater utility feeds for storm sewer improvements and $250,000 from wastewater treatment utility fees for sanitary sewer improvements.

Work will include:

  • Removal of existing asphalt pavement along with curb and gutter.
  • Sanitary sewer replacement.
  • Driveway approach replacements.
  • Asphalt paving.
  • Boulevard restoration.

25th Street SW

Work for this $200,000 project is expected to begin in June of 2025 and be completed early the following month.

Work includes milling off the top one and a half inches of existing asphalt pavement and then paving it again with asphalt as well as two spot repairs on sanitary sewer along with boulevard restoration.

A majority of the cost of the project’s scope will be directed at street improvements with $150,000 coming from assessments and the local tax levy, and $50,000 for sanitary sewer improvements will be supplied by wastewater treatment utility fees.

Bidding for all four projects will be done in March. For more information and updates on Austin’s road projects, visit: https://www.ci.austin.mn.us/public-works/city-construction-projects
