March is National Food Share Month and the Austin Salvation Army will be participating again this year in association with Greater Minneapolis Community Connections (GMCC).
The Austin food shelf will be engaging local community organizations, businesses, faith communities, civic groups, schools, individuals and media to raise food and monetary donations.
All donations will go to the Austin food shelf. In addition to the local donations, GMCC will match a portion of those local amounts using a formula based on current donations plus accounting for the number of individuals the food shelf serves. The more food and money raised locally the more money GMCC will grant the Austin food shelf to better serve local residents.
This annual National Food Share Month is an important event helping keep our local food shelf stocked. You can drop off or send a check, made out to the Salvation Army Food Shelf, to the Austin Salvation Army, 409 1st Ave NE, Austin, MN 55912 or drop off your food donations there. Other participating locations where donations can be given are:
Mayo Clinic
Hy-Vee
Jim’s Super Value
Austin Utilities
Accentra Credit Union
Mower County Employees Credit Union Crane Chapel
Our Saviors Lutheran Church
1st Congregational Church
Grace Lutheran Church
St Johns Lutheran Church
CRC
Rock Solid 4-H
Donations of canned and dry beans, canned vegetables and fruits, cereal, rice, pasta, peanut butter and canned meats are needed. Usage of the local food shelf is increasing as costs for food and shelter have been rising. Currently, the Austin Food Shelf is helping over 1,100 households per month. That is a 37.5% increase over 2024.
If you have an organization that would like to participate or have any questions contact Stacy Wisemore at the Austin Salvation Army at 651-370-7962. The National Food Share Month campaign runs from March 1 to April 6.
