Education is evolving and at Austin Public Schools we are committed to meeting the diverse needs of all learners. Online and blended learning are not about replacing traditional classrooms but expanding opportunities, increasing flexibility, and ensuring every student has the support they need to succeed. Whether students are balancing jobs, extracurricular activities, or personal responsibilities, online learning provides new ways to engage in high-quality education.
Why Online
Learning Matters
Online learning isn’t just about convenience—it removes barriers and creates pathways for success. Students can progress at their own pace while still receiving individualized support from educators. It also opens doors for those who need options beyond a traditional schedule, including students in rural areas, those seeking advanced coursework, or those who thrive in a more flexible learning environment.
Beyond academics, online learning helps students build real-world skills such as digital literacy, time management, and self-motivation—critical abilities for college, careers, and life beyond high school.
Our Commitment to Quality Online Education
Not all online programs are the same, and Austin Public Schools is dedicated to ensuring our virtual learning options are rigorous, engaging, and student-centered. We focus on:
Engaging Curriculum – Courses aligned with state standards that are interactive and meaningful.
Teacher Training and Support – Educators receive ongoing professional development to enhance virtual instruction.
Student Success and Accountability – Regular check-ins, progress monitoring, and personalized support.
Equity and Accessibility – Providing students with the devices, internet access, and accommodations they need.
Family and Community Partnerships – Open communication to keep families informed and engaged in their child’s learning.
Austin Online Academy: A Model for Virtual Learning
Austin Online Academy (AOA) offers a flexible and supportive online learning option for Minnesota students in grades 9-12. AOA students receive access to high-quality coursework, virtual tutoring, mental health resources, and the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities at Austin High School.
Since its launch, AOA has seen significant growth and success:
Passing rates have increased from 40.1% in 2021-22 to 86.3% in 2024-25.
Enrollment has expanded from 78 students to over 120 today.
These results highlight the power of online learning when designed to support students effectively.
Looking Ahead
Online education is here to stay, and we remain committed to providing innovative learning opportunities for our students. By investing in high-quality virtual programs and maintaining strong support systems, we ensure that every learner has the tools they need to thrive—whether in a traditional classroom, online, or a combination of both.
