ADAMS – It’s been a banner week for Southland junior Breeley Galle as reached a scoring standard on Tuesday and then helped her team win its first playoff game in four years when the No. 5 seeded Rebel girls basketball team beat No. 12 seeded Kingsland 59-28 in a Section 1A Tournament opener Thursday.

Galle reached 1,000 career points in Tuesday’s loss to Spring Grove and she put up 16 points, three rebounds and four assists in the win over the Knights (5-18 overall).

Southland (17-8 overall) will take on No. 4 Rushford-Peterson in Mayo Civic Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Monday. It will be the first time the Southland girls will have played in Civic Center since 2019.

“This week has been amazing. Getting to the Civic Center has been one of our goals. We want to see how far we can go,” Galle said. “I wasn’t even expecting 1,000 this week, but it was fun. We’ve been more intense in practice (lately) and we’ve been locked in.”

Southland junior Emma Lewison, who had four points and seven rebounds in Thursday’s win, said that growing up with Galle has brought out the competitive edge in all of the Rebels that has led to the success they are enjoying this season, which has been their winningest campaign in a decade.

“We’ve always been really competitive with each other and we’ve always come into the gym and shoot as a team,” said Lewison. “That’s really contributed to our success. I’m really excited to play in the Civic Center. This is what we’ve all wanted since we were little.”

Kingsland presents plenty of familiar faces to Galle, who has been a multiple state qualifier with the GMLOKS track and field team. GMLOKS’s top sprinter Chantel Reiland finished with nine points in the game. Galle said it’s fun to play against the Knights, but it’s all business between the first and final buzzer.

“In warm ups we’ll say hi, but once we get to the game we each have our own team that we’re playing for,” Galle said. “After the game, we’re friends again.”

After leading 10-7, the Rebels put together an early 20-3 run to go up 30-10 and they scored the first 10 points of the second half to put the game away.
