4,000 pigs lost in late Wednesday barn fire near Brownsdale

A fire late Wednesday evening has resulted in a total loss of a hog confinement and the 4,000 hogs inside.

According to Brownsdale Fire Chief David Pike, the Brownsdale Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at around 11:52 p.m. Wednesday night in the 25000 block of 570th Avenue, Brownsdale.

Once at the scene, firefighters observed a 102 foot by 148 foot hog barn fully engulfed in flames.

The barn and its contents are a total loss,” Pike said in an email to the Herald. “At the time of the incident the property owner could not establish a value for his losses.”

The Austin Fire Department, Rose Creek Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance also responded with mutual aid for both manpower and water.

There were no injuries and the cause and the organ of the fire remain unknown and is under active investigation.

Pike said units cleared the scene at around 4:50 a.m.
