The Austin Police Department has announced they have arrested a 16-year-old male in connection to Saturday’s shooting that resulted in the death of an adult male, who has also been identified as 27-year-old Opoka James Bot Lob Nathanael of Austin.
According to Police Chief David McKichan, the arrest occurred in the City of Austin Saturday evening and that the Mower County Attorney’s Office is in the process of reviewing possible charges. McKichan confirmed that the suspect is from Austin
Law enforcement were called to the 1100 block of Fifth Avenue NW at around 1:36 p.m. on Saturday afternoon for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived they discovered Nathanael who had been shot, and who was later pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts.
A second male was also injured and had been taken to the Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin by a private vehicle.
Several blocks surrounding the scene had been cordoned off and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension also responded to the scene to help APD with the investigation.
McKichan said Monday that the case remains open and is ongoing as an active investigation.
