MINNEAPOLIS — Prosecutors on Wednesday charged a school bus driver with striking and killing a pedestrian in a Minneapolis suburb as he took children to school and then fleeing the scene.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s office charged 33-year-old Jason Rynders of Maple Grove with criminal vehicular homicide. Rynders was jailed on interim bail of $150,000 and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

Police say a woman was killed in a crash just before 7 a.m. Monday in Brooklyn Park. A man told police he was driving when he saw a school bus stopped and then felt his car hit something. It was a woman in the road, according to the criminal complaint against Rynders.

The car driver said he yelled at the bus driver to call 911, but instead the bus driver left.

A preliminary analysis indicates the woman was struck by the front of the school bus and then again by the front axle, the rear tires or possibly both. The woman died at the scene. She is identified only by the initials D.L.D in the complaint.

The bus was headed toward Friendship Academy, a Minneapolis charter elementary school. No children aboard were hurt.

Court records do not list an attorney who could speak for Rynders.
