Two juvenile males were taken into custody after an alleged armed robbery attempt Friday night.

According to Austin Police Chief David McKichan, police received a report at about 10:44 p.m. on Friday from a 61-year-old taxi driver who said that two individuals attempted to rob him at gunpoint in the 600 block of Third Avenue Northwest. He said he drove to the area believing he was picking someone up when the individuals approached the vehicle. One of them struck him in the face with what he believed to be a handgun and demanded money from him.

The driver said he did not give them any money and drove to another location to call police.

During the investigation, police found a neighbor in the area that had a Ring doorbell surveillance camera that captured some of the incident. They also followed footprints that led to a residence in the 600 block of Second Avenue Northwest.

Police established a perimeter around the residence and were awaiting a search warrant when a 15-year-old male who matched one of the suspects seen on the surveillance footage exited the residence. Police detained him and found a BB gun that resembled a handgun on his person.

A second male who was not involved in the incident exited the residence, followed by a 17-year-old male who matched the other suspect seen on the surveillance footage. The 17-year-old was also detained.

Both suspects were transported to a juvenile detention center in Rochester, where they are awaiting a court appearance.
