The Mower County Sheriff’s Department is once again warning people about a scam going around.

Sheriff Steve Sandvik said Friday that there has been another incident of what is being called the “Grandparents Scam,” where people identify themselves as a grandchild who are in trouble.

“Generally, elderly relatives are targets and it’s designed to pull at the heartstrings,” Sandvik said Friday morning.

Earlier this week, in rural Mower County, a man received a call from one of these scammers, claiming to be his grandchild and saying they were in trouble; however, before the man could say anything another relative entered the ruin and the call ended.

Sanvik said that generally the scammers will ask for either money or a gift card and the people will then be directed to either leave the items some place or even have the numbers read over the phone along with the expiration date.

If you feel that you’ve been scammed or an attempt was made, Sandvik encourages people to call the Law Enforcement Center immediately.
