Pacelli students advance to Regional Spelling Bee

Pacelli Catholic School has advanced two spellers to the Regional Spelling Bee.

Melanie Riles (sixth grade) and Yong Achuoth (seventh grade) placed first and second, respectively, in the Pacelli Spelling Bee on Friday, Jan. 10. Third place winner, Kirsten Koopal (seventh grade) will serve as an alternate.

Ten students advanced to the Pacelli Spelling Bee after competing within their grade level classrooms.  These students included: Kedi Oman and Misael Hernandez (fourth grade); James Schulte and Comlan Assogba (fifth grade); Melanie Riles and Joey Schulte (sixth grade); Kirsten Koopal and Yong Achouth (seventh grade); Megan Rauen and Kim Folsom (eighth grade).

Two regional spelling bees will be held  on Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Rochester, Minnesota. The top six spellers from each regional competition will advance to the Southeast Minnesota Final Spelling Bee on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

The champion of the Southeast Minnesota Spelling Bee Final will win an expenses-paid trip (including one adult) to compete in the 2019-20 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC, held at the end of May 2020. Pacelli’s Neha Thawani Nanda earned a trip to the 2018-19 National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. The bee’s purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
