One individual was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin after a fire broke out in a garage early Friday morning.

According to Austin Fire Chief Jim McCoy, firefighters were dispatched at about 1:20 a.m. on Friday to a garage fire at the former Mayo Ambulance (Gold Cross Ambulance) building at 1010 Oakland Ave. W, currently owned by the Housing Redevelopment Authority of Austin. En route, firefighters learned that three individuals living at an attached residence had evacuated the building.

When firefighters arrived, they saw a large amount of smoke and a small fire near an exterior doorway leading into the garage, McCoy said. They were able to extinguish the flames and clear the scene at about 3:30 a.m.

The Austin Police Department also responded to the scene.

One of the tenants was taken to the hospital; McCoy did not know the extent of the individual’s injuries.

The cause of the fire was determined to be rags used for staining that were in a trash can in the garage. McCoy said the rags likely heated up and combusted.

The extent of damage to the building is unknown at this time.
