An Austin man that made his first appearance for a felony domestic assault charge on Monday in Mower County District Court received additional charges on Tuesday.

Paul James Mason, 21, was charged with felony second-degree assault – dangerous weapon – and felony terroristic threats.

According to the court complaint, police took a report from a woman who said Mason had assaulted her on Nov. 26 at a residence in the 500 block of First Street Southeast. Police had been unable to locate Mason at the time.

At about 11:32 a.m. on Nov. 27, an officer was advised that Mason had returned to the residence. When the officer arrived, Mason had exited the residence through a window and fled on foot, but was apprehended. The officer met with a female neighbor, who reported that she was at the residence when Mason met her at the door with a long serrated knife in his hand. She said that he threatened her by making jabbing motions with the knife and told her to get out of his house. She said she was frightened and backed out of the house.

The officer then spoke to the woman Mason was accused of assaulting the previous day. She confirmed Mason had a knife, but did not see what he did with it. She gave a knife to the officer, who then showed it to the neighbor. She confirmed it was the knife Mason used to threaten her.

A review of Mason’s criminal history shows prior convictions for drug possession, theft, domestic assault and violating a domestic abuse no contact order.

Mason will appear in court again on Dec. 16.
