A winter storm brought snow through the area and more could be coming this weekend.

According to National Weather Service-La Crosse meteorologist Molly Peters, the Austin area reported about 5 inches of snow from Tuesday and Wednesday’s storm. The highest amount in Mower County was 6 inches reported in Dexter.

Further west, Albert Lea reported about 8 inches, while about 7 inches were reported in Kasson and 6.8 inches reported at Rochester International Airport, Peters said.

The City of Austin declared a snow emergency Tuesday. The declaration is set to expire at 6 p.m. Friday, unless the city opts to extend it.

Those looking to do Black Friday shopping early Friday morning are expected to experience dry conditions; however, a wintry mix is forecasted to begin early Friday afternoon.

“It’s very complicated right now,” said National Weather Service-La Crosse meteorologist Jeff Boyne. “Friday will probably be a wintry mix with snow and maybe some freezing rain. It looks like it’ll be generally light, but it does not take much ice to cause issues.”

Boyne warned of a potential freeze-up from Friday into Saturday. He also said the wintry mix will continue through the weekend with rain on Saturday and snow on Sunday, though there could be snow accumulation on Saturday night.

“We have a very slow-moving system coming off the Central Plains,” Boyne said. “(Snow and ice) amounts are very uncertain at this time.”
