Rachel Lea Schommer, 49, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019.

Rachel Lea Schommer, 49

Rachel was born Dec. 21, 1969, in St. Paul, Minnesota, baptized at St. Michaels Lutheran Church in Roseville, Minnesota, and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota, where she spent most of her adolescent years. She graduated from Austin High School, and received her diploma from Riverland Community College School of Cosmetology. Her work history included hairdresser, live-in nanny, customer service at a ski lodge in Vail, Colorado, fast-food server, and restaurant assistant manager. She spent most of her childhood on a farm in southern Minnesota, where she hated to bail hay, but enjoyed horseback riding and camping, stamp collecting, baking and cooking, literature, music, art, playing with kittens and spending time with friends. Once she became a mother, her daughter became the center of her life, along with her grandchildren, who she cherished deeply. The best tribute a mother can receive is when her child and only daughter says this about her: “My mother was always there for me and my babies (her grandbabies). She was the best mother and grandmother and had the biggest heart of anyone I know. She was kind, strong, smart, independent, had a heart of gold, and was a goddess in my world.” Rachel’s great sense of humor made her always willing to laugh at herself and with others. She was a hoot to be around. Her genuine compassion for others endeared her to everyone who knew her. She will be sadly missed by many.

Rachel was preceded in death by her grandson, Aadan; her grandfather, Lloyd Schommer Sr.; her grandmother, Muriel Sheets; and her godfather, Ron Miller. She is survived by her daughter, Rebekka Schommer (James); grandsons, Gage, Josiah, Zaire and Mikali; parents, Lloyd Schommer Jr. (Bev) and Susan Carlson (Steve); brothers, Ty Schommer (Lori) and Toby Schommer (Jennifer); nieces and nephews, Naimy Weis (Levi), Alhrik, Gannon and Adeline Schommer and Hannah, Maggie, Jacob and Lucas Schommer; and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many cousins.
