Pet Supplies Plus is hoping to take the next step towards becoming a fixture for the pet community as it will host its grand opening this weekend.

The store, which is located near Marshalls at 1001 18th Ave NW Suite 100, Austin will hold its ribbon cutting with the Austin Chamber of Commerce at 11:30 a.m. Friday. The store will feature various specials from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Pet Supplies Plus has been open for nearly a month, but the store is ready to make things official this weekend.

“We’ve been working out the kinks and training our team members,” a representative from Pet Supplies Plus said. “We want to be the neighborhood pet store. We don’t have customers, we have neighbors. We want to really support all animal welfare groups. They’ll be our partners.”

The weekend specials will feature scratch cards from $5 to $50, free nail trims, and a vote to see who will win a $1,000 donation — the Mower County Humane Society, the Humane Society of Freeborn County or Jay C. Hormel Nature Center.

There will also be dog and cat food giveaways.

“We’ll have plenty of other things in the store, but we don’t want to give too much away,” the representative said.

The opening of Pet Supplies Plus has been in the works for the past three years.

“It didn’t happen overnight. We’re excited that it’s finally going forward,” the representative said. “It’s been an emotional roller coaster of hurrying up and waiting on some things. We’re excited to finally be open and it’s been much overdue.”

Pet Supplies Plus is hoping to work alongside the humane society and it would like to help out in anything animal related in town.

“We want to be the right partner for all of the animal welfare groups in Austin. We want to be the place to help everybody out,” the representative said.
