The Wide Angle: Nothing really makes sense

I’m a little confused. Actually, I’ve been confused for the last few months and it’s a bit unnerving to be honest.
There are certain things in life that deserve answers. The pyramids, the Lochness monster, Odell Beckham Jr., and perhaps why those black beetles are destroying my raspberries.
And yet, I’m still confused and really bothered by the fact that I can’t find the answers to my current problem, a problem that has always conveniently had answers.
I keep waiting for those answers to appear in front of me, or perhaps hoping the answers will appear in front of me. It would make the world right again. It would allow for the greater understanding this certain issue demands in order to align the stars once again.
The Minnesota Twins, as I write this, are three games up on the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central Division. They are hitting the ball all over the state of Minnesota and their pitchers stand on the mound as good as anybody who may happen to walk into Target Stadium.
But we’ll get to that in a bit.
At the beginning of the year, when I wrote my Twins column, which attempts to blow smoke … well that attempts to find the sunny side of professional sports life in our state, I thought that they might be pretty good, but as always I fell short of proclaiming the next World Series Champions.
With optimism but, come reality in the state of our professional sports teams.
Years of following the Twins, Vikings, Wild and the like have shown me that temporing one’s expectations is prudent in the pursuit of stable mental wellbeing.
These teams have always shown hints of what they can be, or probably should be, but in the end these teams have always shown fans what they secretly have thought all season long.
Early playoff exits, missing the playoffs entirely or some sort of other shenanigans that derails a season, a career or a fan’s sanity.
And yet, when the Twins started struggling and the Indians started surging, Minnesota never really let the ball drop. They lost the lead momentarily, but then they stormed back and started pounding the ball again.
Now granted, there are concerns. The starting pitching staff struggles to make it past the fifth inning these days and the bullpen struggles to hold leads later more often than I care to admit.
If the Twins weren’t hitting the ball like they were, we might be in a little bit of trouble.
Case in point. Again, as of Wednesday, 11 twins players are in double digits in the homerun department. Two of those 11 have over 30 homeruns — Nelson Cruz (33) and Max Kepler (34). As a team they have tagged 244 round-dingers.
That’s an offense any team would welcome.
These are not the Twins I’ve come to know, however. These are not the Twins of years past that would continue to sink as we, the fans, suffered along with them, falling into a cycle of abusing chicken wings, searching for answers.
Answers that weren’t the answers we’re looking for now. How does this continue to happen? There was a sort of familiarity with the Twins of the past. We were happy when they were doing well, but understanding when the bottom fell out.
I’ll admit, I’m sort of waiting for the bottom to still fall out. I’m a fatalist in that way. It seems like the natural order would be re-esablished and all would be right with the world again. There would be an order to things again. Those things we’ve come to expect from our Minnesota teams would make everything normal again.
But now, I’m forced to consider the idea that the Twins could do more. Am I thinking they could win the World Series? No. No normal man would ever consider that .. or would they? Is there room to consider a World Series again?
See, this is what the Twins are doing to me. They are forcing me to be optimistic when I was prepared to nod my head in affirmation as that bottom fell out and I could finally say, “Yep, how about those Twins?”
I’m not prepared for this sort of thing.
But I find myself hoping they don’t. It’s kind of fun watching the Twins again. They are kind of exciting.
They’ve even thrown squirrels into the mix.
Ultimately, this is a good thing for Minnesota and it helps us continue along forgetting the day-to-day trivialities.
But, for those of us still “needing” to be disappointed, hang in there. There’s always the Vikings.
