Austin Parks and Recreation
For those interested in the 2019 Austin city archery deer hunt, we received official word from the Department of Natural Resources earlier this week that we are allowed to hold a hunt for up to 60 bowhunters.
Those interested must pass a proficiency test and also complete the NBEF/Advanced Bowhunter Education program hosted by the DNR. The Advanced Hunter Education program can be located online at the DNR website.
The proficiency test will be offered at the Cedar River Archery Club, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 24-25, 54691 270th St., Lansing, MN, 55950. A fee of $5 per shooter will be charged. This qualifying shoot will take place from an elevated platform at a distance of 20 yards. Shooters will have only one chance to qualify, and these are the only available dates and times to attempt to qualify.
Swimming pool
The aquatic center has “mostly” closed for the season. However, the splash pad will likely remain open for a couple more weeks. All other areas have closed.
Splash pad users can access through the north gate which faces the parking lot. Spray features will be available until 8:30 p.m. daily.
Doggie dip
Why none this year in Austin? The Minnesota Department of Health notified us that we weren’t to offer one, so we didn’t.
Boulevard trees
Boulevard trees in street improvement areas in the southwest section of Austin, our goal is always to save trees when possible.

Kevin Nelson
Unfortunately, there are a number of boulevard trees which are located along Ninth, 10th, 11th St. SW, which have been marked for removal. This is specifically in the areas where new curb and gutter was poured this summer.
The street improvement work, which widened the streets, resulted in narrowed boulevards and lowered curbs, allowing for adequate drainage from streets and sidewalks.
However, this curb work required removal of more than a desired amount of root structure on a number of these trees. Thus, it has been advised that the impacted trees be removed. This will take place in the coming months or even weeks. Some replacement trees will be planted yet this fall, in late September or October, weather permitting.
Other areas may not get new trees for a number of reasons, such as being within a boulevard which is too narrow, being located under a power line, etc. If you are hoping to get a replacement boulevard tree, please call the Parks and Rec office at 507-433-1881 to get on the list for evaluation of your boulevard for possible tree replacement.
Replacement boulevard trees, for those whose properties qualify, are made available/offered on a first-signed-up, first-served basis.
Seasonal staff
We are so blessed to not always have an adequate number of staff, but rather to have quality staff. Yes, they are still human, and we’re all prone to make occasional mistakes and lapses in judgement.
There are definitely jobs which pay more than being a public servant, especially in seasonal roles. We’re thankful for those who don’t mind being thrust into the public spotlight and for continuing to put forth effort into what can be mundane tasks and manual labor.
Did you know
For every 10 pounds of excess weight gained, the risk of developing osteoarthritis increases by 40 percent (Source: Dr. Grant Cooper, Health Central). This is yet another reason to stay active throughout your life. One good way is to get out and enjoy your Austin area parks and the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center.
Parks clean-up opportunities
If you have a group seeking to perform some work or needed hours of community service this late summer or early fall, let’s get them reserved for a park and related date.
Make it a great day.
