The Austin City Council voted unanimously in favor of approving changes to the city’s small vehicle passenger ordinance and for the publication of the ordinance during its regular meeting Monday evening.
According to City Clerk Ann Kasel, the changes in the ordinance would allow transportation companies like Uber and Lyft to operate within the city.
“We had to modify our small vehicle passenger ordinance to make those specifications just for the transportation companies,” she told the council.
The modification to the ordinance prohibits smoking in small passenger vehicles hired for transportation purposes. It also clarifies what kind of signage is required to mark said vehicles.
The ordinance will be in effect after publication, Kasel said.
