Hayfield baseball team finishes fifth at state tournament
The Hayfield baseball team showed off its pitching depth as it snuck past South Ridge 6-5 and beat Randolph 16-5 to take fifth place at the Minnesota Class A Consolation Round in Chaska Friday.
Mason Tapp allowed just one run in four innings to beat Randolph (22-4 overall) and Luke Dudycha pitched the win over South Ridge for Hayfield (24-3 overall).
Hayfield led South Ridge (20-8 overall) 4-0 after four innings, but SR battled back to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get within 6-5. Jake Risius, who scored the save in relief, picked up a big strikeout when SR had the tying run on second with two outs in the sixth.
Hayfield, which was playing in its first ever state tournament, will return much of its lineup next season as Mason Tapp is the team’s lone senior in the starting lineup.
