The Hayfield baseball team opened its new season with a blast as it saw moved into first place in the Gopher Conference by sweeping Medford by scores of 3-0 and 14-1 in its home opener Friday.
Hayfield freshman Easton Fritcher threw a no-hitter as he walked two and struck out five in the opener.
Frtcher had no idea he was throwing a no-hitter until a couple of JV players mentioned it late in the game.
“I started freaking out a little bit because I didn’t realize it, but it was pretty fun to hear,” Fritcher said. “It was a good team win. I’m glad my defense was there behind me and my catcher Jake Risius made some good calls. I feel good warming up and I just went up there with a mindset to throw strikes and the defense did the job they needed to do.“
Hayfield was able to play under the lights for a portion of the second game on their field, which has been under construction since last fall.
“We all took a lot of time after we got the field ready and we looked at it,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “It was nice to play on the field after all of the work that’s gone into it since fall.”
